DID YOU KNOW?
Do you read the credits at the end of major film productions and TV series? Have you noticed that the biggest Hollywood hits are very often associated with Quebec-based visual effects and animation studios?
This is because Quebec is one of the world’s three major hubs for VFX and animation production, along with London and Los Angeles. Our reputation is firmly established, and talented people from all over the world come here to work on visual effects and animation.
With more than 40 studios across the province, the sector employs more than 6,500 artists and creators who contribute to some of the world’s biggest films and best television series. This represents a 75% growth since 2017 and more than 3000 new hires are expected by the end of 2023. Within the industry, there are more than 75 types of roles that focus primarily on digital creativity.
The future is bright for the next generation of artistically gifted Quebecers who are passionate about entertainment and eager to innovate. The field also offers competitive salaries and above average benefits, as well as an inclusive and inspiring work environment for the most creative minds.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT QUEBEC
With more than 30 CEGEP and university programs in nearly 25 institutions in Quebec (Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Alma, Jonquière, Matane, Montréal and the City of Québec), the next generation of talent can acquire all the skills required for a first job in visual effects or animation. For example, college diplomas in 3D animation and image synthesis, graphic design and illustration, and cartoon animation are all gateways to the industry. In addition, various bachelor’s degrees also qualify for these jobs. For example, Concordia University’s digital arts and animation degrees, NAD-UQAC’s 3D animation and digital design degree, Université Laval’s arts and science of animation degree, UQAT’s 3D creation degree and UQAM’s animation design degrees.
High quality specialized pathways are emerging for students to become general 3D animators, 2D animators, lighting or compositing artists, or visual effects production assistants upon graduation. Several production coordination jobs and administrative positions (HR, accounting, legal, etc.) are also open to graduates of these programs.
AT THE CENTRE OF CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
To maintain its position as a world leader, the Quebec visual effects and animation industry stays on the cutting edge of technological innovation. Its workers are artists and creators whose profile and academic background are focused on digital creativity and innovation.
The sector is strongly focused on the advances in virtual production, augmented intelligence, machine learning and the metaverse. Talent in this field will be encouraged to understand these new creative processes and use them in their practice. This will allow them to focus more on creation. With the collaboration of the industry, the QFTC has presented a comprehensive action plan regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on the visual effects and animation workforce.
More than ever, visual effects and animation is a promising field for the upcoming generation from here and abroad.
